Exploring Alternative Natural Materials

This presentation by Jan Hopkins is based on over 20 years of exploring and developing ways to process and make baskets and sculptural art from materials that are not thought of as either usable or as basketry materials. Jan found her niche working with alternative natural materials such as citrus peels, melon peels and sturgeon skin. Finding it was increasingly difficult to collect traditional materials, she started looking materials that could be collected in abundance. Starting with orange peels, she worked diligently for many years to make the material stable for the long term and continued the quest using alternative materials, eventually finding ways to work with grapefruit and melon peels. For over 20 years Jan has experimented and incorporated other materials like lunaria (silver dollar seed pod centers), sturgeon skin, lotus pod tops, various leaves, a variety of seeds and petals.

Jan states, “Each material has its own distinct qualities and I have developed many variations of processing and combining materials. Some materials work better together than others. I continue to use traditional natural materials in my work, but have found that I have more options when I have an unlimited unrestricted resource.”

"Her Achilles Heels"

Dimensions 7”x10”x4” each shoe, Date 2011, Material: Lunaria seed pod centers, weathered hydrangea petals, melon peel, yellow cedar bark and waxed linen

I overheard a young woman proclaim "I loved the idea of being in love". Like Achilles heel in Greek mythology, his vulnerable heel was his weak spot; when it comes to romantic love, the heart seems to be the weak spot. On the exterior of the shoes, I have written the infamous proclamation” I (eye) love the idea of being in love”. In the interior of the right shoe, there is a heart with a question mark and the words “mister right”. In the interior of the left shoe, there is a broken heart with the words “left behind”. There is an arrow on each heel symbolizing cupid’s arrow. And finally, there are eyes on the front of each shoe when placed together they are eyes that continue to look for love.

"Light in Darkness"

As a child, I remember watching the dramatized story of Helen Keller “The Miracle Worker”. That movie left a life long impression and admiration of Helen Keller and the reason I included her in my Women Icon series. A woman who reached far beyond anyone’s expectations Helen Keller was the first deaf/blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. As I contemplated how to depict her in a sculpture, I wanted to include her words. I made Braille tablets made of grapefruit peel and beads that says “The best and the most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt within the heart.” I also included arms with the sculpture because communication did not come from her ears or spoken word but by touch. The piece is very textural emphasizing the importance of the touch. The lace like cedar bark is a technique that I developed especially for this piece.

Jan Hopkins awarded an Artist Trust 2010 Grant for Artist Projects (GAP) Program.

A $1,500.00 grant was awarded to Jan to attend the the Society Atelier Sarawak Conference World Eco-Fiber and Textile (W.E.F.T.) Forum 2010 – “Nature’s Color Code in Basketry and Textiles” in Kuching, Sarawak, East Malaysia. The conference included a 4 day field trip to Rumah Garie Longhouse to participate in a traditional “Ngar” cotton mordanting ceremony of Iban master ikat weavers.

The foremost criterion for selection is the artistic excellence of an applicant’s artwork The Artist Trust Gap Program provides support for artist-generated projects. The sum result is a repeated and consistent investment to support and encourage individual artists’ projects working in all disciplines in order to enrich community throughout Washington State.

Artist Trust is dedicated to supporting Washington State artists working in all creative disciplines.

I relate to this piece because ever since I was a child I was always the "fish out of water" or the one who marched to a different drummer...always left of normal! Ha Ha...turns out that was probably a good thing!

My Daughter who is now 33, was a sweet bouncy 9 year old when she drew the picture that is on the chest of the torso. She was our little bright star. She went through the most horrific teen years from the ages of 14 to 22. There was years of tremendous pain and sadness. There was one thing that I held onto that one of the many councelors told me and that was "her base for her personality is formed at the age of 4" and told me "to hold onto that little girl." When she was 9, we printed cards of her artwork. I kept one of her cards in my desk to remind me that little girl was the same little girl that was in so much turmoil. I kept the faith and by the time she was 22, she had her own little girl and turned her life around. Today, I have my daughter back, a happy successful woman with a lot of empathy and knowledge. My life today is so good

The visual mood of this piece says it all, it is light-hearted and happy. The quote on the collar is "Childhood is the most beautiful of all life's seasons." I hope it portrays the gift of innocence that we are all born with and something that I wish we could hold onto or bottle

The National Endowment for the Arts has granted the Western Gallery partial funding to present a multi-media, multi-venue exhibition exploring how artists are responding to the natural, diverse Pacific Northwest in the context of a rapidly changing environment and gathering crisis of degradation. The artistic theme of an ongoing dialectical relationship between man and nature in the Northwest in the past has ranged from the early, mystic painters of the 1940s-1950s to the land-based art of the late 1960s-1970s, climaxing in the 1979 national symposium "Earthworks. Land Reclamation as Sculpture" (King County Arts Commission). While attention has been paid to land-based art and public art involving community based-ecological projects, it is time for critical analysis of artists who are newly engaged in a dialogue on the environment in more traditional places as galleries and museums.This exhibition focuses on twenty-six artists who are concerned with the issues and contemporary conditions of the environment in the Northwest. These artists draw on both the environmental politics long associated with the Northwest and the artistic history of these issues in the regional and national scene. In their approaches some of these contemporary artists face the critical issues head on: growth management as seen in the urban/rural conflict; the connection of transportation and urban sprawl; contested sources of energy; mass production and consumption; toxic management of land, watersheds and waters; and dramatic climate change. Others accent environmental values such as preservation of wilderness and wetlands, sustainability, and biodiversity as well as work out the strategy of artist and nature as co-agents. Finally, some artists enhance current conditions and challenges through the use of an apocalyptic rendering. In this exhibition the viewer will not only have a chance to see the overlapping causes and effects of the issues in artworks but also to hear the resounding voices of our artistic messengers.

Painting unveiled at 40th anniversary celebration in Masset B.C. , Canada

Chris was commissioned to commemorate the 1969 raising of the first totem pole in a century by the Haida people. That arguably marked the renaissance of the Haida Native Culture. The 1969 totem pole was carved by 22 year old Robert Davidson. The presentation of the painting took place at a three day celebration that occurred in the ancestral homeland of the Haida people, the Queen Charlotte Islands, B.C. Canada. The celebration marked the 40th anniversary of the 1969 pole raising hosted by Robert and Reg Davidson. The painting was donated and now in it's permanent home at the Masset Hospital.

This piece is part of the women icon series and homage to Gertrude Stein. I am inspired by her words and the impact she had on the written word. While contemplating how I was going to portray her work, I decided that I wanted to use her most famous quote "a rose is a rose is a rose". According to Wikipedia" In Steins view, the sentence expresses the fact that simply using the name of the thing already evokes the imagery and emotions defused through her own writing and the culture at large." it is also pointed out that "Gertrude Stein's repetitive language can be said to refer to the changing quality of language in time and history. She herself said to a University that the statement referred to the fact that when the romantics used the word "rose" it had a direct relationship to an actual literature that would no longer be true. The areas following romanticism, notably the modern era, used the word rose to refer to the actual through the use of the word, the archetypical elements of the romantics era. It also follows the rhetoric law of thrice fold repetition..."

Concept and Design: These shoes were made to document a moment in time, the excitement and fervor over the nomination and inauguration of Barack Obama. What a time in our history! I took two of his campaign slogans and put them together to say “Yes we can change”. The head of Barack is placed purposely on the heel of the shoes (head over heels). The head of Barack is actually also the “O” in Obama. The “A” inside the shoe is hidden so that when you look into the shoe, you see the word BAM. This is in reference to the comic book super hero Barack that was created during his campaign. The blue star on the back of the shoe is holding up the words written on the outside of the shoe.

Concept: I contemplate the future for our children. A young woman is looking into a koi pond reflecting her future. Japanese associate koi with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Because of its strength and determination to overcome obstacles, it stands for courage and the ability to attain high goals. This is my hope for next generation and our future. I have wrapped the bowl with lotus pod tops symbolizing rebirth.

Artists choosing fabric as a medium (and surprising alternative materials) and sewing as a technique is spreading throughout the contemporary art world. A Stitch in Our Time, organized by fiber artist Ann Baddeley Keister, Grand Valley State University Professor of Art, Allendale, Michigan, includes more than 30 objects by 11 artists that reveal the diversity of approaches to stitching and sewing as part of a studio art practice. The artists are Ilze Aviks, Susan Brandeis, Lindsay Ketterer Gates, Jan Hopkins, Mary Anne Jordan, Ann Keister, Kay Khan, Tom Lundberg, Anne McKenzie Nickolson, Carol Shinn, and Anna Torma. All of them acknowledge a debt to the traditions of crafting objects with techniques related to cloth and sewing, but your grandmother's quilts these are not! The creations of these nationally known artists exemplify the transcendence that occurs when artists of vision combine traditional textile techniques with other mediums such as digital imaging, new methods of dyeing, use of the sewing machine, painting and printing cloth, and incorporating non-traditional materials. That the works selected for the exhibition are exquisitely made is part of their appeal. It is also the individual voices of these gifted artists that instill the objects with magic and visual poetry.
